Walking and Waiting | A Poem

Song of Solomon 8:5 says, “Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved?” I absolutely love this image. I can almost hear the shock in the questioning voice “Who is that? Coming from there? Leaning on her beloved?”

I love this image, because I’ve known the wilderness. I can remember the desert places of sadness and sin. It is truly horrible to be far off from Christ. But how amazing when his word comes, and we are brought near to Jesus. What a wonder! I must lean into him. I must walk with him. He is my life. He is the only one who offers such a great salvation. Jesus is not a fairytale. I know what it is like to groan, and to hear creation groan around me. But to think that I have a Savior whose groans save me—even me! And those groans keep me near. How can I not walk with him, and lean in to him, even as I wait for him to come again…

Here is my meditation on walking with Jesus and waiting for him to return.

Walking and Waiting

Desire groans in creation.
Array of thorns that dress the roses.
Swaying. Withering. Crashing.

Waiting.

Generations cry in the labor.
Capped in beads of sweat.
From dust forming to dust planting.

Waiting.

Hope groans in believers.
Cloaked in promise on the road.
Entrusting. Stewarding. Abiding.

Waiting.

Pride persists from below.
Badged in demands to overthrow.
Pointing. Pounding. Condemning.

Waiting.

Humility groans in the Spirit.
Crowned with drops of blood, sweat, thorns.
Desiring. Helping. Interceding.

Oh, to see the man redeeming.

Wisdom bows in the garden.
Wearing a submitted heart.
Good and evil understood. Producing fruit upon the wood.

Prayer reaches God’s own ear.
Endowed with ample hands.
Subduing. Anchoring. Defeating.

Freedom dawned no tired eye.
Suit of dust. Showing trust.
Wait with me an hour. Only by the Spirit’s power.

Waiting.

Come Lord Jesus come!
Humbly and hopefully we wait.
Come Lord Jesus come!
Eagerly and patiently we wait.

We will wait until…

Longing finds the Day.
Wearing smiles of belonging.
Fully hearing. Seeing. Breathing.

We will wait until…

Brilliance shines in creation.
Modeling glory, displaying life.
Flowing. Producing. Healing.

We will wait until…

Grace radiates in believers.
Enhanced as a jewel—the bride from every tribe and nation.
Clapping. Singing. Dancing.

We will wait until…

Justice reigns on the throne.
Displaying light upon his face.
Shining. Speaking. Dwelling.

We will wait for our redemption. His word will prove true! And we will say, “Behold, this is our God, we have waited for him that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9)
